Abstract
We show that with a minimal enlargement of the Higgs supermultiplet structure of the supersymmetric SU(5) model it is possible to get a theory where: (i) m b m τ is in accordance with experiment; (ii) sin 2 θ W = 0.22 and (iii) the dominant proton decay mode is through the gauge-mediated channel p → π 0e + at a rate (10 −1 yr −1) compatible with the present experimental limit. This is possible since the grand unification scale is predicted to get exactly the same value as in the ordinary SU(5) model.
