Abstract
AbstractThis paper offers a brief sketch, first, of the organization of knowledge that was inherited from the Middle Ages and remained dominant in Europe around the year 1450, and in the second place, of the ways in which this organization was modified in response to the challenges of the early modern world, notably the Renaissance, the Reformation, the invention of printing and the discovery of America.
