Abstract

The coverage and temperature dependent adsorption of K on Pt(111) at T > 120 K is studied by LEED, X-ray photoemission and Auger electron spectroscopy. A series of ordered structures is seen with increasing K coverage: (√7×√7) R19.1°, 2×2, (√3×√3) R30° and 3 2 × 3 2 . The thermal stability of these structures increases with increasing K coverage. For coverages θ K > 0.33 the LEED patterns indicate a rotational epitaxy where the lattice misfit correlates with the rotational angle. The maximum coverage of a K monolayer is 0.44 corresponding to a linear compression of 10% compared to the smallest K-K separation in bulk K. A two-dimensional phase diagram of K on Pt(111) is proposed.
