Abstract

Ordered Structures of Glycerol Droplets Suspended in Nematic Liquid Crystals Jinwoo Han Department of Physics, Daegu University, Gyungsan 712-714 (Received 12 August 2008, in nal form 10 November 2008) In this work, we studied the structures formed by glycerol droplets suspended in a nematic liquid crystal layer (5CB, E7, TL205). The elastic director deformation of the liquid crystals in the vicinity of glycerol droplets causes attractive and repulsive forces between the glycerol droplets. As a result of these interactions, the glycerol droplets form a well-ordered hexagonal structure. We estimated the distances between the glycerol droplets by using the dipolar and the quadrupolar interaction models and compared them with the experimentally observed values. The details are discussed. We also monitored the formation of the ordered structure of glycerol droplets as a function of time. We found that glycerol droplets were rst created randomly, then were formed with linearly-ordered structures and nally were formed with an ordered hexagonal structure.
