Abstract

Using the method of orthogonal collocation, four strategies are presented here for the order reduction for models of staged separation systems: (a) sectional orthogonal collocation without extrapolation; (b) sectional orthogonal collocation with extrapolation; (c) orthogonal “SPLINE” collocation; and (d) global orthogonal collocation. The model discrete structure is preserved in all strategies. The families of orthogonal polynomials have not been analyzed in previous work. The strategies are applied to distillation problems and results are evaluated. In some cases, multiplicity of solutions can be observed.
