Abstract

Abstract The order and biaxiality of the fluorescent molecule p -bis(0-methylstyryl)benzene (bis-MSB) in the nematic phase of the liquid crystal ZLI-1167 have been determined as a function of temperature by means of a recently developed 13 C NMR approach. The method can also provide information on the carbon chemical shift tensors and we demonstrate that it can be readily applied to molecules containing a fairly large number of chemically different carbons, even if the assignment of the shifts in the isotropic phase is not available.
