Abstract

Late in his life the famous fluid dynamicist Horace Lamb told a pre-war audience of scientists, 'When I die and go to heaven there are two matters on which I hope for enlightenment. One is quantum electrodynamics and the other is the turbulent motion of fluids. And about the former I am really rather optimistic'. The superficial incomprehensibility of the turbulent motion of fluids has nothing to do with the fact that water is wet. Complicated motion is simply the rule in the Universe because there are so many more ways to be complicated than to be regular.
