Abstract

The American Heritage Dictionary defines chaos as Any condition or place of total disorder or confusion. After listening to what the previous speakers had to say about what is going on now and what the effects might be, I think it is clear that what we, as physicians and ophthalmologists, are experiencing is something very close to chaos. But, if you accept Henry Adams' view that Chaos often breeds life, when order breeds habit, I chaos, or near chaos, may not be such a bad thing. How we meet and deal with today's confusion will determine the quality of our future life. Our approach, then, will be the most vital factor in determining if and how well ophthalmology influences its future, and whether at least some measure of order and habit can return to our lives. To emphasize how important a constructive, pragmatic, and realistic approach is to the determination of our future, I offer two visions.
