Abstract
Artiflcial magnetic dipole arrays arranged on a square lattice exhibit a fascinating variety and complexityof conflgurations. Among the 16 possible conflgurations, six fulflll the spin ice rule of two dipoles pointing intoa vertex and two point out. We present experimental realizations of magnetic dipole arrays and discuss theremanent state as well as the magnetization reversal in an external fleld.PACS numbers: 75.75.+a, 75.60.Jk, 41.20.Gz
