Abstract

Given the – seemingly undisputed – significance of baptism in primitive Christianity, Jesus’ own baptismal practice is surprisingly obscure. This article argues that he did once baptize, but stopped – marking an important shift in his self-understanding. Christian baptism was nevertheless rooted in his ministry, and thus truly ‘ordained by Christ’.
