Abstract

Three species of Orchopeas fleas have been recorded as true parasites of the Western Gray Squirrel, Sciurus griseus , in California, USA. As a result of the brevity of the original descriptions, the specific distinctiveness of these fleas has been in doubt. Our study of a long series of California tree squirrel fleas indicates that 3 recognizable taxa are present. Descriptions and figures showing characters of taxonomic significance are presented for 0. nepos, 0. latens , and 0. dieteri.
