Abstract

Several clinical conditions of the reproductive tract, such as cryptorchidism, lead to the choice of an orchiectomy procedure as a treatment, but that is not its only indication. An orchiectomy is also indicated in cases of owners who wish to carry out population or behavior control. There are some techniques mentioned in the literature for performing the procedure, such as the pre-scrotal, scrotal and perineal approach, and the open, closed and semi-closed techniques, varying according to the surgeon's preference. In any case, prior detailed clinical evaluation and treatment of identified diseases is recommended before the procedure is performed. In addition, an adequate postoperative period and correct application of the technique reduce the risk of contamination and complications. This study aimed to carry out a literature review on orchiectomy in horses, in order to help veterinary medicine students and professionals in their studies and choices of techniques to employ.
