C. Abstract For both the coordinate time t and the proper time S, two periods are defined: the anomalistic, which is the time for the particle to travel from one perihelion (or perigee) to the next, and the sidereal period, which refers to the lapse in time between two successive passages across a line through the origin and fixed in direction in space. The four periods are calculated approximately. The sidereal t-time period T of a rela- tivistic orbit is compared with the period T8 of a Newtonian orbit having (a) the same perihelion and aphelion distances and (b) the same perihelion distance and the same velocity at perihelion. It is found that different methods of comparing relativistic and classical orbits lead to different values of the relative differ- ence (T, - T8) T8-2 and that therefore an experimental value of (T - T8) T8-1 would indicate which method of comparison should be adopted and so not provide a test of general relativity.
