Abstract

ABSTRACT The present study is focused on biobutanol production from potato peel waste in dilute orange peel extract by Clostridium acetobutylicum MTCC 11274 at three concentrations of 20, 40, and 60 g/L as sole nutrient sources. The biomass and solvent production from potato peel were enhanced in orange peel extract with the concentration and improved the sugar recovery. The effect on solvent production from 60 g/L potato peel in dilute orange peel extract was relatively higher than 20 and 40 g/L. The butanol yield was improved from 0.04 to 0.35 g/g from 60 g/L potato peel waste in orange peel extract. The butyric acid concentration was highly correlated with butanol production. The Clostridium acetobutylicum MTCC 11274 showed no inhibitory effect from D-limonene in orange peel extract. The potato peel waste hydrolyzate prepared in orange peel extract enhanced the growth of Clostridium acetobutylicum MTCC 11274 and fermentation of acetone, butanol, and ethanol.
