Abstract

Background: Myiasis is a disease, identified by infestation of live larvae in vertebrate beings, being able to attack skin, mucosa, submucosa and internal organs. Although it is rare, there are still present in the tropical and subtropical regions of underdeveloped countries and developing countries. The larva of the Cochliomyia Hominivorax fly Callipharidae family, of the order Diptera, is the main cause of Oral myiasis in humans, feeding on living tissues and sometimes necrotic. Living in rural areas, poor oral and body hygiene and the presence of neurological or motor disorders increase their occurrence. The treatment is based on the mechanical or surgical removal of eggs and larvae, tissue debridement and drug treatment. Ivermectin has been used as a preferred drug in patients with myiasis. Because it is an antiparasitic drug of wide spectrum, its action is based on producing tonic paralysis of the musculature and induce paralysis and death of the parasite, in addition to being a fast absorption with high concentration, with little effect collateral to the human being.
