Abstract
Infective syphilis is caused by the anaerobic alimentary spirochete, Treponema pallidum. The changing epidemiology of syphilis reflects the falling use of barrier methods of contraception, high numbers of sexual partners, and sexual promiscuity. Man, 30, had several patches in the dorsum of the tongue that appeared over about 2 weeks. Clinical examination revealed multiple rounded red areas with a loss of tongue papillae. His medical history did not include human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection, but he smokes and drinks socially.
