Abstract

Oral mucosal malignant melanomas are extremely rare tumours arising due to the uncontrolled growth of melanocytes of the basal layer of mucosa of the oral cavity. The anatomic complexity and lymphatic drainage of the region dictate the need for aggressive surgical procedures. As this tumour is a rare, data on epidemiology, tumour behaviour treatment, follow-up and patient survival are mainly based on case reports. Early recognition, diagnosis and treatment greatly improve the prognosis. Here, we present a case report of 60-year-old female with oral malignant melanoma. The lesion was removed by wide local excision with 1 cm margins all around and wedge resection of the mandible with bilateral supraomohyoid neck dissection. The patient is disease free after 4 years and is under regular follow-up.
