Abstract

Lipoma is the most common benign tumor that occurs at any region where adipose tissue is present. However, as the tongue is devoid of adipocyte it is an extremely rare site for development. Herein we report the case of an 82-year-old male patient that complained about an asymptomatic volume increased during 10 years, with exacerbation during the last month. Examination revealed a 4 cm nodular lesion that was located on the right dorsal region of the tongue. After initial blood tests and Doppler ultrasound that suggested benign tumor without neovascularization, it was performed an excisional biopsy that demonstrated squamous epithelium and an underlying zone displaying a lesion enclosed by a thin collagen fiber capsule and composed of lobules of mature adipose tissue. These findings were consistent with lipoma. The tumor was completely excised and after 6 months of follow-up, there was no recurrence of the lesion.
