Abstract

Leukoplakia is a mostly white oral mucosal lesion that has a higher chance of developing into cancer. The review's three main goals are to: (1) shed light on the challenges associated with making an accurate diagnosis; (2) assess the most recent findings regarding (bio) markers that may be useful in predicting the likelihood of a malignant transformation; and (3) assess the most recent findings regarding the best course of treatment for patients with oral leukoplakia. Current Research Results The current state of research on oral leukoplakia is very limited, primarily due to the inadequate definition. There are currently no novel (bio)markers that can accurately forecast the onset of malignant transformation. Treatments, both surgical and nonsurgical, have not yet been shown to be successful in stopping such metamorphosis. Synopsis Randomized controlled research on the many elements of oral leukoplakia can only be carried out if the definition's flaws and the lack of uniform reporting problem have been resolved.
