Abstract

Niacin deficiency in dogs is accompanied by atrophy of the papillae, with the exception of circumvallate papillae. The degree of involvement depends upon the severity and duration of the deficiency. The lesions are noninflammatory. The degenerative changes are restricted to epithelium and include poor differentiation, lack of keratinization, hydropic degeneration, and proliferation followed by final atrophy.
