Abstract

Background: Oral health is an important attribute of overall health and well-being. The behavior of oral health providers and their attitudes toward their oral health could affect their capacity deliver oral health care and thus might affect the oral health of their patients. Nursing is an important supplementary branch, where the nurses play an important role in delivering health-care services along with professionals. Aim: To assess oral health attitudes and behaviors among nursing students of Siddhartha University, Tumkur, India. Methodology: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among nursing students of Siddhartha University, Tumkur, India, using Hiroshima University-Dental Behavior Inventory (HU-DBI) questionnaire. Results: Most of the students, i.e., 143 (84.11%) brushed their each teeth carefully, but 56 (32.94%) were never been taught brushing technique by professionals. About 84 (49.41%) students put off going to the dentist until they have a toothache. Mean HDU scores among nursing students were 7.2. Conclusion: Study showed that nursing students have average attitudes toward oral health and behaviors. Continuing education programs and hands-on training programs should be conducted for update and reinforcement of oral health knowledge.
