Abstract

THE stimulation of the growth and development of the comb of fowls by means of inunction or injection of male hormones into baby chicks or capons has been recognized as one of the best methods for the assay of androgenic hormones. The relative effectiveness of many compounds when so administered has been reported (Parkes and Emmens, 1944). The effectiveness of androgens when administered orally has received less attention. Emmens (1939) determined the amounts of various androgens required to produce an average increase of 5 mm. in length plus height in the combs of groups of five Brown Leghorn capons, when administered in three daily doses in oily solution by (a) intramuscular injection, (b) unction on to the comb, or (c) mouth. The results are shown in Table 1.Riley and Hammond (1942) fed day-old Rhode Island Red chicks for a period of 28 days on a chick starter feed to .
