Abstract

In Response: We appreciate the valuable comments by Drs. Broadman, Rice, and Hannallah on our study. We had also recorded visual analog scale scores to assess postoperative pain in 29 children in our study [1], although we did not present these data. The visual analog scale scores for the placebo, clonidine 2 micro g/kg, and clonidine 4 micro g/kg groups were 6.6 +/- 1.7 (mean +/- SD, n = 11), 5.7 +/- 1.5 (n = 10), and 4.4 +/- 1.6 (n = 8), respectively. Clonidine 4 micro g/kg provided a lower score than placebo, although clonidine 2 micro g/kg did not. This result seems to be consistent with the assessment of pain using an objective pain scale system and may allow us to conclude that oral clonidine reduces postoperative pain in children undergoing minor surgery.
