Abstract

Aim. To examine the association between tobacco use exposure in media and awareness about consequences of tobacco use among early adolescents. Methods. 218 children studying in Eighth grade were selected through census method from two government schools, Udupi District, Karnataka, India. Inclusion Criteria: male and female children were included. Tools used: Adolescent smoking consequence questionnaire (ASCQ-30, Brandon & Baker 1991). Informed assent and consent was obtained from children and from their parents before the study. One-way ANOVA was used to analyse the data. Results. Mean age of the age children was 13 years. Prevalence of tobacco use was 1.5% and 36% of them stated that they have tried using tobacco in the past. Children who reported watching actors smoking in television and movies often and sometimes had significantly higher knowledge and awareness about consequences of tobacco use than the children who never see actors smoking in movies and television and who never watch television and movies (F = 3.06, p < .046). Conclusion. Tobacco exposure in media increases the awareness about the consequences of tobacco use among adolescents.
