Abstract

Abstract Opus Dei, which is Latin for “Work of God,” is a Catholic organization whose purpose is to help people obtain sanctity through their work and daily activities. The formal name is the Prelature of the Holy Cross and Opus Dei. In 1982 it was given the status of a personal prelature by Pope John Paul II. A prelature is a type of institution proposed at Vatican II that carries out a special pastoral mission. It is the only prelature recognized by Vatican authorities.
