Abstract
During the last ten years the market of optoelectronic semiconductor devices has been increasing rapidly. In 1980 they reached total sales of about $ 800 millions worldwide which is almost 6% of the whole semiconductor devices' market. This rapid increase was mainly due to the various distinct advantages of light emitting devices based on III-V semiconductors over other light emitters e.g. incandescent lamps. However, it is emphasized that this success was only possible by combined efforts on both basic research and materials technology of III-V semiconductors. The state of the art of optoelectronic semiconductor devices, their technology and their main applications are briefly reviewed. The last years' development is characterized by extended work on very sophisticated devices like laser diodes and other heterostructure devices for optical communication systems.
