Abstract

We propose the use of surface-modified gold nanorods (GNR) as a contrast agent for optoacoustic (OA) detection into small volume of tissue or cell clusters. Optoacoustic (OA) imaging of small volume is challenging due to the need to overcome large background signal from surrounding tissue. As such, accumulation of targeted GNR in cells will yield increased, selective laser-cell interactions and therefore improve sensitivity of OA detection.
