Abstract

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is an intracoronary imaging system, which produces cross-sectional images of the coronary arteries using near infra-red light with a high resolution (10 – 20 μm). This technique visualizes various patterns of atherosclerotic features of the coronary artery in vivo and may differentiate lipid-rich, calcified and fibrous plaques as well as vulnerable and stable coronary plaques. Moreover, OCT may contribute to an optimization and guidance of percutaneous coronary interventions by detecting several features of inadequate stent implantation, such as stent-malapposition, stent edge dissections, tissue or thrombus protrusion through the stent struts or during follow-up an insuffizient stent endothelialization.
