Abstract

The concept of the ‘unmanned factory’ runs into several difficulties which make its success doubtful. This paper compares the technology centred approach with the human centred approach to computer-integrated manufacturing, showing that the latter results in improved productivity. It is also suggested that the idea of replacing human capability with machines should be overcome.
