Abstract

Abstract A microprocessor based probability density analyser system for determining the optimum coding threshold of facsimile (fax) signal is described. The system performs the operations of data fetching, processing and analysing, through which an adaptive threshold is evaluated and fed back to the fax machine. A global thresholding approach with the threshold selection based on the criterion of maximum separability between the object and the background in the subject document is adopted. Experimental results obtained from a Xerox Telecopier 485 fax machine show that the algorithm is stable, and that the resultant thresholds set for various documents reproduce clearer copies than the default values used in the machine.
