Abstract

Using the Boltzmann transfer equation and Maxwell's equation, an explicit expression has been obtained for third harmonic component in the reflected and transmitted waves from a magneto-plasma slab when an electromagnetic wave of frequency omega is incident normally on it. These expressions for the third harmonic component in the reflected and transmitted waves have been used to obtain the optimum conditions under which the conversion efficiency of third harmonic is maximum. It is concluded that the efficiency of third harmonic conversion is maximum when ( omega p/ omega )2=4.0, ( nu o/ omega ) approximately=10-5, xi 0=0.77*10-3 and the fundamental wave frequency is equal to the electron gyrofrequency.
