Abstract

AbstractUniformity trial data for shelled pea yield were collected from 1,150 basic unit plots in 1967. Each basic unit was 32 cm (two rows) wide by 3 m long. Optimum plot sizes were estimated using the value 0.46 obtained for Smith's soil heterogeneity index and certain cost assumptions.Optimum plot size for unguarded plots was estimated as 3.3 m2 (approximately 36 ft2). Optimum size of test area for guarded plots was 3.1 m2 (approximately 33 ft2).Differences between plot shapes were not significant for plots two through seven times the basic unit size, but variances of some larger plot sizes were lower for long narrow shapes.
