Abstract

To meet the increasing load demand of electrical power, distributed generation (DG) plays an important role. Optimum placement of DG to the distribution network may have technical as well as economical benefits. In this paper, optimum placement of biomass DG has been studied considering hourly load demand. Both technical as well as economical aspects of biomass DG placement have been analyzed and presented in this paper. In this study, active power loss reduction is considered as the objective function while placing biomass DG in the distribution network. To optimize the size of biomass DG, a metaheuristic optimization algorithm (named symbiotic organisms search) has been used. The study has been carried out for two different distribution networks (viz., 33- and 69-bus distribution network). From the study, it may be noticed that the active power loss reduces significantly after placement of DG to the distribution network for all the possible load percentages for both the distribution networks. Considering annual load demand, a significant amount of energy saving may be noticed after placement of the biomass DG to both the distribution networks under consideration. The economic analysis shows that the placement of biomass DG is economically beneficial to the utility for both the distribution networks under consideration. From the present study it may be noticed that the optimum placement of biomass DG is technically as well as economically beneficial for both the considered distribution networks.
