Abstract

The relations between slit dimensions, beam divergence, luminosity, and resolving power of various single-focusing mass spectrometers are established. From these, the conditions for maximum luminosity for a given resolving power are derived. It is found that a third-order spectrometer operated under optimum conditions can be more luminous than one of conventional design. Data are given.
