Abstract
A new concept in building construction is introduced. Arches or vaults with rigid members can be designed with zero moments at the joints (funicular), thus greatly decreasing the need for rigid joints. The lengths and inclinations of these members are determined for the optimum funicular arch which has maximum enclosed area. Analytic solutions are found for arches with five segments or less.
