Abstract

Optimum design of structures is achieved by a modified genetic algorithm. Some features of the simulated annealing are used to control various parameters of the genetic algorithm. The new evolutionary algorithm is employed to design space structures. The method improves the computing efficiency of the large-scale optimization problems and enhances the global convergence of the design process. To reduce the computational work, some approximation concepts are employed. Response surface method is used to approximate the functions under consideration. A double layer grid is designed for optimal weight and the results are compared with conventional genetic algorithm.
