Abstract

The objective of this study was, by field experiment and visualization of internal airflow,to clearly understand the forced ventilation of a piglet house with perforated ceiling which was verypopular in Korea and then find better design of ventilation system. Those data will be basically usedto find the mutually optimized ventilation system of the piglet house. This study was conducted at acommercial piglet house to investigate the performance of the forced ventilation and determine theeffect of the ventilation system on internal airflow, air temperature, humidity, dust, and gas in thepiglet house. The internal airflow patterns were studied with the help of computational fluid dynamics(CFD). Considering the recommended maximum ventilation rate (Wathes and Charles, 1994), theventilation system of the piglet house was found 44% overestimated. The CFD computed resultswithout piglets showed that the maximum air velocities at piglet location were 0.06, 0.55, and0.95m/s, respectively for 5, 50, and 100% of ventilation rates. It was assumed that the wind velocitycould be decreased in the case of animal existence in the compartment.
