Abstract

AbstractCutting time ratio (Tr) is among the most important factors indicating the effectiveness of Whitworth quick return mechanism (WQRM). This investigation added a novel alteration that enhanced the Tr of a traditional laboratory WQRM. The modification was accomplished by integrating a group of additional links into the WQRM. This addition comprised a crank, a ground (base), a sliding block (pivot) and a slotted link. An analytical model and a computational dynamic simulation were conducted on the modified WQRM (MWQRM) to analyse the performance of its mechanism. Different values for the lengths of the new extra links were examined to validate their contribution to increasing the Tr values. Results illustrated that the MWQRM effectively enhances Tr, in which the Tr exceeds eight times for the MWQRM in comparison with the conventional one.KeywordsModified (novel) Whitworth quick return mechanismCutting time ratioAnalytical method of linkage’s kinematicComputational dynamics of modified quick return mechanism
