Abstract

The question of the optimum choice of counting times in, for example, thermal-neutron experiments is investigated on the basis of the statistical theory of errors. It is shown that a significant improvement in statistical precision can be achieved in both scattering and transmission experiments by such optimization. For transmission we find, in agreement with a recent article by Vincent, that even larger improvements can be obtained by optimizing both the counting times and the sample thickness.
