Abstract

Electrical-resistance measurements of stacks of thin metallic layers under compressive loads are presented. There exists, for each supported load, an optimum apparent layer area so that the stack possesses maximum electrical resistance in a direction perpendicular to the layer interfaces. This experimental conclusion is of significance because the most efficient mechanically-strong thermal insulators consist of such stacks of thin layers.
