Abstract

Abstract Foreign-educated nurses come to the United States for a variety of reasons, but among the prominent motives are education and employment. Most of the readers of this journal encounter foreign nurse graduates who are in the United States for educational reasons, but we at the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools (CGFNS) deal largely with foreign-educated nurses who are seeking employment, since CGFNS provides a certification program for foreign-educated nurses who wish to practice in the United States. The free interchange of ideas among the world's nurses is unarguably desirable. And the US academic community rightly encourages such interchange by seeking foreign-educated nurses for its educational programs. However, issues are not as clear when it comes to employing foreign-educated nurses in the US health care system.
