Abstract

Introduction As part of the Solutions for Patient Safety Collaborative, our institution joined the Situational Awareness initiative in 2014. The goals of this QI program, locally named Watchstander, were to develop criteria identifying hospitalized pediatric patients at risk for deterioration. Over 80 largely anecdotal criteria have been considered to-date. Thus far, this method has shown to perform poorly. Collaborating with data scientists, the team transitioned to a data-driven approach to evaluate each historical, current, and novel criteria for placement on our “watcher” criteria list.
