Abstract

Objective: This study made use of a computer-based technique to optimize the nutrient intake of Holstein dairy cattle during early lactation using locally available by-products in order to investigate, analyze and determine how best locally available by-products can be combined effectively and efficiently to formulate least-cost ration. Method: Eight locallyavailable by-products, namely fish meal, corn bran, soybean meal, copra meal, limestone, cracked corn, molasses and spent grain, were considered in this study. In order to obtain optimal feed rations, mathematical models were formulated and solved by taking into consideration the nutrient requirements (net energy for lactation (NEl ), Rumen Degradable Protein (RDP), Crude Protein (CP), Calcium (Ca), and Phosphorus (P)) of lactating dairy cattle, and the nutrient compositions and any restriction factor of the by-products. Findings: Results of the study provide least cost rations that meet the specified nutrient requirements of lactating Holstein dairy cattle. Novelty: Dairy cattle contribute much to the milk production in the country. Hence there is a need for proper cattle feeding management since feeds greatly affect milk production.
