Abstract

ABSTRACT This article describes the results of a study that was conducted to establish a plan and subsequently perform modifications to the controls and operating strategy of a conference center located in Hammond, Indiana to maximize energy efficiency. During an initial analysis of building energy efficiency, it was determined that the building heating ventilating and air conditioning controls were outdated, poorly documented, lacked efficient coordination, and were partially malfunctioning. It was also determined that the existing control strategy resulted in poor air allocation to ducts and that there were several malfunctioning duct controls. An energy efficiency evaluation was conducted and a research effort initiated to determine ways to reduce costs. As part of this effort, the building HVAC controls were replaced with a wireless master control system that downloads optimal control patterns to smart thermostats for individual zones within the building as weather and building use patterns change.
