Abstract

In interconnected power systems, the coordinated operation is becoming more significant and difficult due to the increasing size, environmental constraints, and ever increasing complexity due to penetration of renewable energy sources. So the major task is economic and secure operation of power systems with minimum frequency deviations due to fluctuating load demands. Moreover, the performance of the power system should be optimal besides being coordinated. Both the load frequency control and the economic dispatch issue command to change the power setting of each turbine-governor unit. A typical automatic generation control strategy is proposed where both the objectives are coordinated. In this work, a simulation model of single-area and two-area power system is built using MATLAB platform. Then, the coordination of economic load dispatch with load frequency control is done to minimize the frequency deviation of load and cost associated with dispatch. A set of optimization techniques is applied to get the optimum value of frequency. The results of each optimization technique are analyzed and compared on the basis of ISE, IAE, and ITAE criteria which are the measures of quality of any power system.
