Abstract

A hybrid Aluminium (Al) metal matrix composites was synthesized using Al 7075 (Aluminium alloy 7075) reinforced with Titanium Carbide (TiC), Graphite (Gr), and Alumina (Al2O3) by the process of stir Casting. A dry sliding wear test was performed by using a pin on disc apparatus. ASTM G99 standard was followed for the optimum performance of the Pin-on-Disc test. The wear test was designed according to Taguchi’s L8 (2x4) orthogonal array and the parameters such as 20 N and 40 N of applied load, reinforcements 4% and 6 wt% of TiC, 6% and 9 wt% of Gr and 7% and 8 wt% of Al2O3 is chosen. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) table result was used to analyze the test parameter data. It was observed that the influence of the TiC%, followed by the applied load and percentage of Al2O3 on the wear rate were significant, whereas the influence of graphite on wear rate was less significant. From the S/N ratio (Signal to Noise ratio) analysis, the optimal combination of wear parameters was obtained to minimize the wear rate. It was also concluded that the small variations in the percentage of TiC shows the considerable effect in wear rate based on the result of signal to noise ratio (S/N Ratio) analysis.
