Abstract
Interpolative/extrapolative prediction is an effective two-channel linear image coding method that combines extrapolation and interpolation, and has strong predictive power. This paper shows that interpolative/extrapolative prediction can be treated as a nonseparable 2-dimensional filter bank with extrapolation. Conventional coding methods do not necessarily code an arbitrary input image in optimum condition, since the number of taps of the filter and the coefficients are fixed. This paper proposes a method that codes an arbitrary input image in optimum state with a small number of parameters with freely chosen coefficients. This is achieved by choosing the number of taps freely under the conditions for perfect reconstruction and choosing the coefficients so that the coding gain is maximized. The paper also shows, as an extended idea, that the method can be applied to reversible/nonreversible coding, which transfers a nonreversible coding to a reversible coding. The effectiveness of the proposed method has been conformed experimentally using standard test images. © 1998 Scripta Technica, Syst Comp Jpn, 29(10): 75–82, 1998
