Abstract
The paper is devoted to an application of the particle swarm methods and the finite element method to the optimization of 2-D structures (plane stress/strain, bending plates and shells). The shape, topology and material or thickness of the structures are optimised for the stress, strain and volume criteria. The numerical examples demonstrate that the method based on particle swarm computation is an effective technique for solving computer aided optimal design.
