Abstract

The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) currently monitors up to 19 parameters for the Superpave mixtures under its Quality Control/Quality Assurance (QC/QA) program. Data from six Superpave projects of KDOT was analyzed in this study to find the optimum combination of volumetric parameters, air voids and Voids in Mineral Aggregates (VMA), for 19.0 mm nominal maximum size Superpave mixtures with and without reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) materials. The results show that the optimum mixtures have air voids close to or equal to 4% which is the target value, and VMA above 13%, but not higher than 14%, and dust proportion equal to 0.9%. The suggested working range for the asphalt binder content from the optimization analysis is - 0.5%, which is 67% larger than the currently specified range of - 0.3% by KDOT. Other Superpave mixture parameters were found within the limits originally proposed.
