Abstract

A mathematical model of the electric-furnace process for making Type 304 stainless steel was developed and used to generate technical and economic data describing the process in terms of four stages. The optimum melting practice for a given set of operating restrictions was then determined from these data by means of the dynamic programming technique. Sensitivity analyses were made on a number of operating decisions in order to show the effect of these decisions on the overall production costs.
